Mind Meld is a term that may not be appropriate for this topic, so if you are a literalist, please forgive me (again?) for taking this liberty. But, when I think of the phrase, “Nothing new under the sun” I think of mind meld. I know that mind meld is really about minds connecting, as in Star Trek, Dr. Spock, Vulcan terminology. But when I consider this concept regarding the phrase “Nothing new under the sun,” I think differently. Perhaps I should use the term mind-bending verses mind melding, but regardless, the point is the same. Think about it deeply and enjoy the ride.

In the Old Testament Christian Bible, from scripture Ecclesiastes 1:9 and also in the Torah reads:

“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” This verse in scripture is a topic for some great mind melding debate. Those words came from David’s son Solomon, King of Israel.  Solomon asked God for wisdom and by God’s grace became known as the wisest man ever.

I feel compelled to establish a baseline so that the contextual variables don’t totally distort the message but also do not roadblock the stimulation of thought regarding this notion of ‘nothing new under the sun’. For me, at least in my internal debate, is this true and why? So, to respond to that question, I believe there is nothing new. Thus, what does that mean? Since every day, we see, discover and sense things as never, how could this be true? What does that mean for you?

When I consider our universe, which resource-wise is the earth, I think of what we have to work with. Not to be a pessimist, but I believe what is here is what we have and will be as long as this celestial body exists. Ergo, there is nothing new under the sun! You can innovate, invent, analyze and make modifications, but at the end of the day, what you have is not really changing. The only thing changing is what you do with it. Yes, I admit to skipping a few steps, but this is an 800 (give or take a few) word blog so I can’t dig too deeply. But, to get to my point, Solomon was inspired by God to see the world this way, and though I am not claiming Mind Melding with Solomon, I see how this concept can motivate you to become better at whoever you are and whatever you do. Take what you have and improve!

I know you (and I) are constantly searching for that George Jetson hovercraft route from A to Z. But guess what; I don’t think you will ever find it. I surely haven’t. Assess where you are and then use your gifts to improve and close the gap that George’s vehicle can never. It takes getting in the game and then stepping one foot in front of the other toward your new self or a new goal. It’s like hiking, and if you have done some, you know that you never arrive in an instant but when you get there; it is very rewarding. It may be the view, the air or the accomplishment but always a pleasure when you reach that special place.

You all have what you have to work with. There is nothing you can do about that. But you can develop an intentional focus, conduct planning, and put forth the effort to get things accomplished to close your gap (we all have one). Whether you are CEO’s or janitors of giant corporations, people struggling to get a company out of the garage, parents trying to do the best you can with your kids, or an “Average Joe” just doing what you can to keep the wheels going around, the question remains: what are you are doing to improve?

Life is like a messy, unorganized garage. When you purge, organize and clean, you get motivated to do more because you fall in love with the results. You construct shelves, bin up loose items, label the bins and organize them by activity and become neater and tidier. Soon your mess becomes a mecca of productivity and the project car that has been sitting idly gets your attention, innovativeness, and motivation. Vroom! Vroom! Vroom!

There is nothing new under the sun but what is available to each of you is still in great abundance regardless of your position at work or in life. Use it to become more of who you want to become. Begin today! You will be glad you did.
